Penang Subdistrict 12 parents struggle to prepare for conditional MCO

BALIK PULAU: Parents in the Southwest Penang district here are struggling to prepare for the imposed conditional motion control order (MCO) that will begin on Friday (Nov 6).

With schools, nurseries and kindergartens closing for two weeks, caregivers are caught up in the conundrum of working from home while caring for little ones.

Employees in essential services, however, are in a particular bind.

KL Chong, who works part-time in the medical sector, said that although she was allowed to leave the house to work, she had no one to care for her three preschool children.

“My employer gave me a letter of authorization to move and get to work. But with the kindergartens closed, I have to babysit anyway.

“I am lucky that I only work part time and I can choose not to enter.

“It must be terrible for the essential workers here who have to work and have no place to send their children,” said Chong, 36.

Even those outside the MCO’s conditional limit are affected, like Amber Lee, who lives in Island Glades and sends her son to her in-laws’ house in Bayan Lepas during business hours.

“My husband and I will have to take turns taking vacations these two weeks in order to take care of our daughter.

“There is no way for us to get in and out of the MCO conditional area twice a day to ship her to and from her grandparents’ house,” he said.
