GEORGE TOWN: Penang Pretrial Detention underwent sanitation and other strict precautionary measures following the death of an elderly inmate who later tested positive for Covid-19.
Several people, believed to be prison department officials dressed in personal protective equipment (PPE) gowns, were seen inside the prison, with two dressed in PPE standing guard inside to open the doors and also allow the vehicles in and out of the building.
Earlier in the day, guards and policemen were seen entering and leaving the prison.
George Town OCPD Asst Comm Soffian Santong confirmed that the 85-year-old prisoner, who died on Monday, had tested positive for Covid-19 after his death.
“A prison director found him unconscious in his cell around 7 am on Monday and was taken to the emergency department of Penang Hospital.
“He was pronounced dead at 7:50 am and sent to the Penang Hospital forensic department.
“He had a history of being treated for tuberculosis and HIV at Penang Hospital.
“After his death, he was tested for Covid-19 and tested positive around 2 pm Monday at Penang Hospital,” he said in a statement yesterday.
ACP Soffian said the man, who was from Ayer Itam, was jailed for murder.
The body was delivered to Penang Hospital following standard operating procedure, he said, adding that the state Department of Health has been informed of the positive case of Covid-19.
The Penang Pretrial Detention is the third prison affected by the coronavirus after two prisons, in Tawau and Alor Setar, were affected. increase in Covid-19 infections there.
The Enhanced Targeted MCO imposed at Tawau Prison from September 11-25 was extended from September 26 to October 9, due to the double-digit cases it recorded.
