Penang police seize ringgit 14 billion unregistered drug

GEORGE TOWN: Penang police arrested a trade union that processed unregistered drugs with the arrest of two brothers and a married couple and the seizure of various types of drugs worth RM14 million.

Penang Police Chief Sahabudin Abd Manan said the Department of Criminal Narcotics Investigation, the Penang State Department of Health (JKNPP) and the Penang Branch of the Malaysian Department of Chemistry carried out two raids on Bukit Mertajam and Butterworth jointly.

He said the first raid took place at a factory in the Machang Indah Industrial Park, Bukit Mertajam, at 10 a.m. last Thursday.

“The police arrested three locals, including the owner of the premises, 48 ​​years old, and a married couple, 48 and 44 years old. The factory was found to be processing unregistered pills and drugs.

“JKNPP also seized 22 types of unregistered drugs worth RM2 million.

“Subsequently, the police raided a store in Taman Kencana, Butterworth, for carrying out the same activity and arrested a man, 50, brother of the first suspect (owner of the premises) in the first raid.

“JKNPP also seized 156,777 bottles of various unregistered drug brands worth RM12 million,” he told a press conference, also attended by the head of JKNPP’s pharmacy control arm, Arnie Fadzilah, here today.

Sahabudin said the investigation found that the union had been carrying out unregistered drug processing activities at the factory and the store since earlier this year.

“The suspect in the first raid has a history of five criminal activities and drugs. The couple were his workers, while the suspect in the second raid also has a criminal record, ” he said.

He said his party managed to uncover the union’s activities after gathering intelligence information in recent weeks following its suspicion of drug-processing activities at the factory.

“The factory and the store were conducting unregistered drug processing activities. All four were released on police bail the same day after JKNPP took their statements, “he said.
