GEORGE TOWN: Penang MCA has defended the restaurant in Bukit Mertajam with communist-themed decorations after the police seized wallpaper and glasses bearing the face of Mao Tse-tung.

Penang MCA President Datuk Tan Teik Cheng (Photo) He said the party described the action against the restaurant as an overreaction.

“The posters were just decorations.

“There are better ways to handle the situation than removing the wallpaper,” he said on Sunday (January 3).

Tan, who is also a vice president of the MCA, said he did not believe the restaurant owner had a propaganda agenda.

On Saturday (January 2), police acting on public notice carried out an inspection of the premises and found various elements of communist ideology on the wallpaper in the restaurant’s dining room.

There was a wallpaper that showed cartoons of the leader of the Chinese Revolution, Mao Tse-Tung, a soldier holding a red book, and a group of Chinese army personnel.

The police also seized four small cups with the face of Mao Tse-tung.

A 23-year-old restaurant manager has been detained for further investigation.

Investigations found that the restaurant is owned by a 41-year-old man and his Chinese national wife.

Police are still investigating the case.

The suspect is known to have another outlet in Pulau Tikus that has a similar concept.
