GEORGE TOWN: Police will barricade the apartments of the Persiaran Paya Terubong, Relau and Desa Bistari Apartments, Blocks A and B, in Batu Uban from December 7 to 20.

The two locations have been declared red zone areas and placed under the Enhanced Movement Control Order (EMCO).

The district police chief, Soffian Santong, said 265 policemen, with the assistance of the Armed Forces, Civil Defense and Rela, would be assigned to monitor the areas.

“In addition to roadblocks, we will also place checkpoints to monitor the movements of residents to stay within EMCO areas,” he said.

The two locations are at Mukim 12 and Mukim 13, where a two-week extension of the conditional MCO was implemented.

However, there would be no restrictions on travel between districts, Soffian said. “The police have established three special monitoring teams to monitor Mukim 13 with the cooperation of the Penang City Council.”

Residents are under orders to stay home. Business and social activities are prohibited and essential business services can operate under restricted orders.

Soffian said EMCO would affect up to 10,000 residents living in the 2,730 apartments in Persiaran Paya Terubong, and 2,000 residents of 520 apartments in Desa Bistari, Batu Uban.

Commenting on a report from Desa Bistari residents, which includes foreigners, who are said to have fled the area after the EMCO announcement, Soffian said police were ready to help the Health Ministry locate those involved.
