Chow Kon Yeow proposes that all members of the Penang legislative assembly accept a pay cut to help those affected by the pandemic.

GEORGE TOWN: Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said today that his government was considering pay cuts for all 40 state assemblymen and the amount saved will go to the state Covid-19 fund.

The state government had instituted a similar measure in March.

At a press conference today, Chow said that if the pay cuts are implemented, it would be to buy food rations for the underserved, in addition to helping the front-line.

Previously, Chow and its exco members donated their full April wages to the fund, to accelerate the purchase of personal protective equipment (PPE) for medical workers. The other assembly members accepted a 30% pay cut for the same purpose.

In March, the federal government cut the salaries of all ministers and their deputies for two months.
