GEORGE TOWN: Penang Prime Minister Chow Kon Yeow said tonight that a meeting of state leaders with Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin was canceled tomorrow.
The news of the cancellation came amid reports of a flurry of VIP cars arriving at Muhyiddin’s residence in Bukit Damansara tonight.
Sarawak Prime Minister Abang Johari Openg is also believed to have canceled his trip to Kuala Lumpur for the 9:30 a.m. meeting. M., convened by Muhyiddin shortly after the end of the consultations between Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah and the Malaysian Rulers today.
Istana Negara later announced that the king had rejected a request from the government to declare a state of emergency. The governors had sought emergency powers to deal with the recent surge in Covid-19 cases, and also in the name of political stability.
Before the palace’s declaration was announced, Chow had told the FMT that he would attend the 9:30 am meeting with the prime minister tomorrow. However, a source told FMT tonight that Chow had canceled the trip, and so had Abang Johari.
No reason was initially given, but Chow later told FMT that he had canceled his trip to KL because tomorrow’s meeting was canceled.
In Kuching, the CM Sarawak office had sent an invitation to the media for an event attended by Abang Johari in Sematan.
The meeting between Sultan Abdullah and other Malaysian rulers began in the afternoon and ended around 6 in the afternoon. In a subsequent statement, the king said that a state of emergency is not necessary in any part of the country.
He had also reminded politicians to stop politicking, which can disrupt the stability of the country’s administration, and highlighted the importance of the 2021 Budget, which will be presented at the Dewan Rakyat on November 6.
