CITY OF GEORGE: Thirty-three facilities in Penang have been ordered to close since the Motion Control Order (MCO) was enforced for non-compliance with standard operating procedures (SOPs) on Covid-19 prevention.
The chairman of the State Housing, Local Government and Urban and Rural Planning Committee, Jagdeep Singh Deo, said today that of the 33 premises, 13 were located on the island and 20 on the mainland.
“On Penang Island, the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) has closed 10 restaurants, two mini markets and one public market for not complying with SOPs.
“On the mainland, the Seberang Perai City Council (MBPP) took the same action against 20 venues, including four food courts, several public markets and an entertainment center,” he told a press conference here.
He also said that due to the recent increase in Covid-19 cases in Malaysia, both municipalities would take more severe action and improve their operations to ensure that SOPs are practiced at all times, especially in crowded areas.
“Starting tomorrow (October 6), MBPP and MBSP will increase their workforce to ensure compliance with SOPs in critical points such as public markets and restaurants,” he said, adding that the number of personnel mobilized would depend the size of the facilities.
Meanwhile, Jagdeep expressed his gratitude to the Penangites for playing their role by adhering to the SOPs on preventing Covid-19.
He said that as of October 4, MBPP had conducted checks at 335,116 locations on the island and posted a 99.65% SOP compliance rate.
“Meanwhile, on the mainland, the MBSP recorded a 99.30% SOP compliance rate after conducting controls at 571,516 locations,” he added. – Called
