KOTA KINABALU: A PBS leader said today that the party tried to avoid electoral clashes with the Perikatan Nasional (PN) component parties but its efforts were undone when its allies did not return the courtesy.
Vice President Radin Malleh said that PBS had done everything possible to avoid electoral clashes. “But we are also fully aware that sometimes it is difficult,” he said.
Malleh said that in the Tandek seat that had been assigned as the PBS seat, the STAR party had openly placed Anita Baranting to defend the seat. “Its proponent was the head of the STAR division, while the second was the division treasurer,” Malleh said in a statement here today.
Baranting is contesting the position as an independent. In 2018, as a member of Umno, she had been elected by a majority of 4,600 votes against candidates from Warisan, STAR and PCS.
PBS shocked today after running seven additional seats on top of the 15 it previously announced, sparking more clashes between the BN and PN parties.
In the initial 15 seats, PBS set out to contest a total of eight seats against matches of BN versus Umno in Bengkoka, Tanjung Aru and Telupid, against PBRS in Matunggong, Tandek and Kadamaian, and against Sabah MCA in Kapayan and Karamunting.
Today, PBS issued a new list of candidates who had seven additional seats: Paginatan, Lumadan, Tambunan, Bingkor, Tulid, Moyog and Liawan.
In total, there will be clashes on 17 seats between BN, PN and PBS.
Malleh said that PBS recognized the “friendly contests” between them and other parties friendly to the PN in the 16 state elections.
“As relayed to NP leaders and the Sabah public, we have indicated that there will be friendly contests in some key constituencies where PBS’s grassroots position is strong, as demonstrated in past elections. But our mission is clear: we want to win all the seats we are contesting.
“The issue was brought up for discussion in several meetings on the allocation of seats, and in the case of the allocation of seats made by the BN Secretary General, Annuar Musa, he warned that there would be overlapping of seats with other parties of the coalition” , said. .
Malleh, who is also contesting the Melalap seat, said that in the 15 seats allocated to PBS, PBRS also contested three seats, namely Matunggong, Tandek and Kadamaian.
He added that the Bengkoka and Melalap seats were also contested by Umno.
“Of course, we take this in good faith that the contest would be conducted in a way that strengthens the position of the PN in Sabah. These were the basic objectives that were discussed in meetings with both PN and BN.
“For this reason, after conducting a close and critical analysis of the Kadazan Dusun Murut (KDM) areas, and based on the requests from our bases, we decided to enter into friendly contests in the Tulid and Paginatan squares that we had even announced a lot. before. .
“Coincidentally, these seats were those assigned to STAR. At the seat allocation meeting chaired by PN Secretary General Hamzah Zainudin, we of course raised and appealed our applications to compete for these seats, so it was not new. “
Malleh further added that PBS decided, in response to the request of its Muslim bases, to participate in a friendly contest at the Lumadan headquarters, which is contested by Umno.
“In general, we take it as a friendly contest. The important thing is that a component of the PN wins all the seats ”, he emphasized.
He said that in addition to winning allotted seats, PBS will also be fully committed to working with PN and its constituents to ensure victory for all seats in other constituencies across the state.
