Paul Scholes hangs carrot from Liverpool to Wijnaldum amid Barcelona links

Paul Scholes claims that Georginio Wijnaldum would be making a mistake by leaving Liverpool for Barcelona after stating his belief that Jurgen Klopp’s team will win the Premier League title again this season.

Wijnaldum is in the final year of his contract at Anfield, where he has been since 2016. In that time, he has collected medals in the Premier League and Champions League.

He remains a key player for Jurgen Klopp, but his coach will soon have to find a way to work without him. Wijnaldum will be able to freely negotiate with foreign clubs from January.

The Dutchman served as a timely reminder of his importance to Liverpool with another stellar display on Sunday. And the goal that Wijnaldum scored was the chosen one of the group when the wolves were crushed 4-0 at Anfield.

Asked by midfielder after the game, Klopp admitted that he still hoped the Dutchman would stay.

“I hope so. You can see that he plays all the time, we have a very good relationship,” said the German.

But while Klopp couldn’t say too much, the Amazon Prime expert Scholes made it perfectly clear why a move to Barcelona would be a mistake.

“Why would he want to leave, the way (Liverpool) play attacking football every week?

“He was linked to Barcelona but never came out, but why would you want to leave? I think they will win the league again and it is an exciting team for him.

“He is a Barcelona-style player and could fit into the Barcelona system. And I know that there is that Dutch connection, which will be very important in Barcelona. Especially with Koeman there or for how long we don’t know because they are fighting. But why would you leave such an exciting team? “

Pressed on why he admires him so much, Scholes added: “I like everything he does. He goes about his business quietly, there is nothing flashy about his game. He’s great on defense, he’s a real plus for Liverpool.

“He plays every week, he is one of the first names on the roster. And he appears with important goals, it is the first of the season, but in recent years he has been brilliant ”.

Scholes becomes the second former Manchester United legend to praise Wijnaldum. Last week, Rio Ferdinand proclaimed his “love” for the Reds star.

Those feelings were echoed by Scholes’ partner. Amazon prime expert Peter Crouch.

He also regretted that Wijnaldum did not leave Liverpool for Barcelona.

“You look at Barcelona and Real Madrid and they are the holy grail for some players, but sometimes it doesn’t work. Liverpool are a better option than them ”.

Wijnaldum shy about Liverpool’s future

Wijnaldum himself was quick to avoid questions posed about his future at Liverpool after Sunday’s win.

“I already said in my previous interview that I don’t want to talk about the status of my contract,” Wijnaldum said. “I am talking about games, performances and soccer. The club should talk about this.

“Of course there is a connection (with the club and the fans), there was a connection from the first moment I came here. The fans support me a lot ”.
