The Frenchman is an Old Trafford legend who won five Premier League titles and a Champions League trophy with Sir Alex Ferguson at United.
Ferguson pulled Evra out of Monaco in 2006 and made his debut against Manchester City, but was replaced at halftime in a 3-1 loss.
It was a terrible start to his life at United and Evra recalled that even his own agent dismissed it.
‘”What the hell am I doing here?” I was relaxing in Monte Carlo, but soccer is very fast here, “Evra told UTD Podcast about his early days at United.
‘” Oh my gosh, you’re done Patrice. You should go back to Monte Carlo. ”
‘I remember thinking that and the worst part is when the game ended.
‘We returned to my apartment with my agent and his wife and my agent looked at me like this and said,” Patrice, I’m sorry. ” I was like, why? “I’m sorry to bring you here. You never will, it’s too difficult, you should stay in Monte Carlo.”
‘In front of his wife. That day was so bad, so embarrassing.
Agent My agent told me that I should never have gone to Manchester United.
“So yes, I have this difficult time, but it helped me become who I am.”
Evra would eventually adapt to the Premier League and establish himself as one of United’s best left backs.
The 38-year-old is now a coach at the club and was asked which game he would like to revive the most.
“My first game,” he replied. ‘My first game, because people ask me:” What is your best moment? ”
‘And they expect me to say something. But I’ll say the derby, the first game, because everything was new, I got a big slap in the face.
‘I thought I was a great player! My agent didn’t believe in me in front of his wife, Ferguson gave me the hair dryer …
‘It just made me realize:” Hey, you will have to work very hard here if you want to be a United player. ”
“So that’s the moment I want to relive, because it was a difficult moment, but such a positive moment.”
