KOTA KINABALU: The proposal to appoint a PAS representative in the state legislature is not acceptable in Sabah, says Datuk Christina Liew.
The head of the Sabah PKR feels that PAS ideologies are not suitable for Sabah, which is home to more than 30 different ethnic groups of various religious backgrounds.
“The proposal to include a representative of the PAS in the state legislature and government is not acceptable to the people, given that Sabah is an exemplary Malaysian state for its multiracial, interfaith and multicultural harmony where peaceful coexistence has been the hallmark of our life, ”he said in a statement on Saturday (October 3).
“The people of Sabah embrace the principle of moderation and the concept of unity in diversity,” Liew said.
The Api-Api assemblyman said that the proposed inclusion of a PAS representative in the Sabah state assembly would damage the multicultural character of the state.
She was commenting on Selangor’s PAS leader Roslan Shahir Mohd Shahir’s statement on Friday (October 2) that the party is qualified for a nominated deputy seat in the Sabah legislature and government.
On Thursday (October 1), Barisan Nasional General Secretary Tan Sri Annuar Musa had said that he expected PAS to receive at least one of the six nominated assembly seats available to the state government.
Liew, former Senior Deputy Minister and Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, noted that the people’s non-acceptance is reflected in an ongoing petition to the Sabah government, called “PAS is not allowed in the Sabah cabinet.”
The signature campaign was started three days ago by the “Better Sabah” group and hopes to reach the 25,000 mark.
More than 16,500 signed the petition online at change.org at 1:30 p.m. on October 3.
Liew further argued that PAS did not contest any seats in the recently concluded 16th state election, nor has it won an election in Sabah.
“The repeated loss of the PAS in previous elections in Sabah is seen as a clear rejection of the party by the people,” he said.
