Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar says Nik Muhammad Zawawi Salleh’s comments on the Bible were his personal opinion and had nothing to do with GPS.

KUCHING: PAS MP Nik Muhammad Zawawi Salleh’s comments on the Bible in the Dewan Rakyat were his own opinion and had nothing to do with Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), a Sarawak MP said today.

Santubong MP Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said that GPS shared different positions and political ideologies with the other parties in Perikatan Nasional (PN).

“The GPS is not part of the PN. It is PN plus GPS. So, we do not share the same political ideologies or positions with the PN parties. We only support the federal government led by our Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.

“So whatever (Zawawi) said was his personal opinion. (His opinion) has nothing to do with us (GPS), ”he said.

The PN Plus government coalition is made up of Barisan Nasional, PAS, GPS, STAR, PBS, PBRS and SAPP.

Wan Junaidi, who is the minister for business development and cooperatives, was referring to the controversy that erupted last Wednesday after MP Pasir Puteh said the Bible had been distorted or altered. He said this after having previously argued that all religions, including Christianity, were against alcohol use.

When asked about Sarawak PAS’s intention to compete in the upcoming state elections, Wan Junaidi said the Islamist party should not do so.

“If PAS wants GPS cooperation, then it should not compete in the next state elections,” he said, adding that such a move would affect GPS’s relationship with PAS leadership at the federal level.

According to Wan Junaidi, the top PAS and PPBM leaders had assured GPS that both parties would not compete in the upcoming Sarawak elections.

However, Sarawak PAS secretary Mohd Arifiriazul Paijo claimed that he had not received any instructions from party leaders at the federal level not to participate in state elections.

Therefore, he said that the party’s electoral machinery will continue to prepare for the upcoming state elections and general elections as well.
