Hadi Awang says PAS is giving way to allies to secure direct fights in state polls.

PETALING JAYA: PAS said today that it is opting out of the Sabah elections because it wants to prioritize preparations for the 15th general election.

Its president Abdul Hadi Awang also said in a statement that he was giving way for his allies to contest the polls for the good of the alliance, referring to Muafakat Nasional.

“The PAS respects its allies in Sabah who intend to compete for all 73 seats in state elections, after negotiation efforts are completed.

“In that sense, PAS has decided to give way to its allies to ensure direct struggles at the state polls, in order to preserve consensus and consider future political implications.”

The party will continue to mobilize support for its allies in state elections at the local level, he said.

Yesterday, Sabah PPBM chief Hajiji Noor announced that PN would contest 29 seats in the state elections.

He said the coalition would be represented by its PPBM, STAR and SAPP components, adding that 60% of PN candidates were new faces. He did not mention PAS.
