KUALA LUMPUR: Police detained 93 patrons from a karaoke center in a shopping mall along Jalan Ampang here when they were raided by Wangsa Maju’s CID officers.
One of the downtown karaoke rooms was even the size of a multipurpose room, operating illegally after its business license expired in July.
Priced at RM50,000 per night, the room is complete with alcoholic beverages and a DJ.
A team led by Wangsa Maju’s CID Operational Intelligence Officer Insp Abdul Hafiz Ab Hakim raided the facilities at 11 p.m. Saturday (November 21) with the assistance of officers and staff from the Kuala Serious Crimes Division. Lumpur (D9).
Nik Ros Azhan Nik Ab Hamid, head of the Kuala Lumpur CID, said the karaoke center was raided after police received information about entertainment activities at the establishment on weekends, including when the conditional motion control order (MCO) was still in effect.
“Among those arrested were 66 local clients, 44 men and 22 women, as well as 11 foreign men and 15 foreign women. They were busy partying when the police raided the establishment.
“The business license also expired after the government bans any entertainment activity during the conditional MCO,” he said when contacted on Sunday (November 22).
SAC Nik Ros Azhan said the police also seized several items, including a sound system, alcoholic beverages, receipts and cash.
“Local clients detained were handed compounds while foreigners are being investigated under the Immigration Law,” he added.
SAC Nik Ros Azhan also said that the operators of certain points of sale are devising ways to avoid detection.
This includes making sure customers park their cars on the basement level and not near the store, or encouraging customers to use email services, he added.
