KUALA LUMPUR: A Pakistani man was sentenced to 30 days in jail and fined RM10,000 today for bribing an immigration officer with a RM12,500 bribe to help free 21 foreigners last month.

Muhammad Irfan, 34, a cloth merchant, pleaded guilty to giving the bribe in a car in front of a restaurant in Putrajaya on November 16.

The money was given to an immigration officer at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport entry point control unit in exchange for the release of all foreigners so they could return to their countries without any legal action being taken against them. for staying longer in the country.

Appealing for clemency, Muhammad Irfan, who was not represented, said that he was the sole breadwinner in the family with four children and that his wife had just given birth two days ago. She added that she had not yet resolved the issues related to her son’s birth registration.

The prosecution said that he had been an agent for foreigners and that he had been carrying out this activity since October.

A Bangladeshi man, Ahmmed Md Rana, 37, was charged in a different court of sessions with giving the same immigration officer a bribe of RM8,500 to free eight of his compatriots.

The crime would have been committed in the same place and on the same date. No guilty plea was recorded, as the defendant did not understand the charge that was read to him in Bahasa Melayu.

He was granted bail of RM10,000 pending the charge being read out again on Monday.
