PETALING JAYA: Yesterday’s Sungai Selangor contamination dates back to a factory at Taman Velox in Rawang, Selangor, a source said, with solvents removed through a manhole flowing to an Indah Water Konsortium (IWK) sewer plant ).
A source from the joint investigation team investigating the incident said controls at the factory premises found 40 plastic water containers containing solvents that had the same odor detected at the IWK sewer plant and all four treatment plants. of water that were closed.
“Based on our investigations, we suspect that the facility was used to store scheduled waste such as ink, paint and pigment waste.
“It is also suspected that these scheduled wastes were disposed of through a sewer at the facility. Ten samples (of the solvents) were taken and a police report was filed at the Gombak District Police Station.
“The discharge is suspected to have flowed into the IWK sewer plant. The facilities have been closed by the Selayang City Council (MPS), ”the source told FMT.
The joint investigation team consists of the police, the Selangor Water Management Authority, the Department of the Environment, MPS, the Gombak Land Office, the National Water Services Commission and Air Selangor.
The chairman of the Selangor environment committee, Hee Loy Sian, said yesterday that the source of the contamination from Sungai Selangor is traced to an IWK plant in Taman Velox.
He said the oil or solvent was discharged into a sewer, which then flowed to the sewer plant.
IWK had denied the allegations that it was involved in odor pollution, saying it was caused by the illegal dumping of third-party waste.
The closure of the Sungai Selangor Phase 1, 2 and 3 water treatment plants and the Rantau Panjang plant saw 1,139,008 households in 1,279 areas in the Klang Valley run out of water last night.
Air Selangor said the plants resumed operations this morning and the water supply is expected to be restored in stages starting at 3:00 p.m.
There have been six unscheduled water outages caused by pollution this year, with water treatment plant closures occurring on March 17, April 16, September 3, October 4, October 19, and yesterday.
Meanwhile, the burst pipes had also caused unscheduled water outages on February 7, May 5, June 3, June 11, July 21, August 6, September 16, October 14, and October 16. .
