Orange suits at court? MACC officers make the call, says the chief

PUTRAJAYA: MACC investigating officers can decide whether or not to lock the suspects in the orange outfit when they are brought to court for pretrial detention, says Datuk Seri Azam Baki.

However, the chief commissioner said that those detained in the MACC dungeons must wear the orange suit.

“I have given investigating officers the power to decide on this.

“In some cases, officers may feel it is necessary to lock them up to facilitate identification.

“Bear in mind that in most cases, there will be other agents from the enforcement agency who will take their suspects to court to request pretrial detention,” he said on Thursday (October 8).

Azam cited an example in which his investigating officers took seven suspects to pretrial detention.

“If they hadn’t been in the orange suit, it would have been difficult to identify the suspects,” he said.

Those in the MACC lockdown must also wear the outfit for identification purposes, he added.

“I know that some people are talking about human rights. But we must also consider the rights of people who demand that we carry out our duties properly and effectively,” Azam said.

His clarification comes as a result of the questions raised about whether it is correct for the MACC to take the suspects to court for preventive detention with the orange suit and handcuffed.
