PETALING JAYA: DAP Secretary General Lim Guan Eng and Amanah President Mohamad Sabu called on Pakatan Harapan to stop wasting time with “opportunists” National Alliance MPs who exploit them.
In a joint statement, Lim and Mohamad said PH must face the reality that the opposition needs a restart, after it failed to stop the approval of the federal budget.
“Yesterday’s vote (Tuesday) has clearly shown that the 108 deputies who oppose PN are the same number that stood firmly with PH in March 2020. Not a single government deputy voted with PH, including those who supposedly support PH Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
“Clearly, these government deputies are experts at playing political games to get maximum influence from the PN government,” they said.
They said PH declared its support for PKR president Anwar as a prime ministerial candidate and that he could court MPs who are not kleptocrats.
However, the budget approval showed that the backbenchers were only using PH for their own benefit.
Lim and Mohamad said instead that more time and resources should be spent on allies fighting for a common cause and that PH should look beyond its 92 MPs and focus on the 108 opposition MPs.
“Tuesday’s budget vote has taught us not to waste our energy in looking for the mirage of more than 111 MPs based solely on the PH core of 92 MPs. Should the 108 MP be the base instead, how much stronger will PH-Plus be? “
This figure would appear to include MPs from Warisan and Pejuang, led respectively by former Sabah Prime Minister Shafie Apdal and former Prime Minister Dr. Mahathir Mohamad.
Both leaders disagree with Anwar.
“Now there must be a political reboot to focus on building a more united opposition group that can fight as one in the next general election.
“PH leaders must put aside the baggage of the past so that PH can expand to PH Plus with a formidable force of 108 MP. With 108 PH Plus deputies as a solid group, anything is possible, ”said Lim and Mohamad.
