School-age children in non-MCO states will return to school beginning Jan. 20, the Education Ministry says.

PETALING JAYA: Only those students who sit the main government exams will be able to return to school in states affected by restrictions under the movement control order, the Ministry of Education announced.

Elementary school students and Form 1 to Form 4 students in the MCO states will undergo online learning beginning January 20, when the regular school year was to begin.

However, private kindergartens in the MCO states can remain open.

Schoolchildren in other states, including those in private and international schools, will follow their regular school calendar.

The MCO states are Selangor, Penang, Melaka, Johor, Sabah and the federal territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya. A 14-day partial lockdown was ordered starting Wednesday, with domestic travel prohibited and social activities restricted.

In those states, students who take one of the six public exams and related international exams will be able to return to school. The public exams are:

Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM), Sijil Vokasional Malaysia (SVM), Sijil Kemahiran Malaysia (SKM), Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM), Sijil Tinggi Agama Malaysia (STAM) and Diploma Vokasional Malaysia (DVM) for 2020 and 2021.

Those in boarding schools can return from January 16. Schools will issue travel permission letters.

The 2021 school year begins on January 20 for all public schools and government-assisted schools and ends on December 9 in Johor, Kedah, Kelantan, and Terengganu and on December 10 in all other states and territories.
