PETALING JAYA: The upcoming general election will see only one Perikatan Nasional candidate for each disputed seat, says coalition chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
He said that the Perikatan logo, having triumphed in the Sabah elections in September, would unite all parties in the next elections.
Muhyiddin, however, said that general elections should only take place when the Covid-19 pandemic is over.
Addressing Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia’s third annual general meeting (AGM), but the first held since Perikatan’s formation, Muhyiddin, who is the party chairman, said that he appreciated Sabah STAR and SAPP for joining Perikatan and looked forward to that more parties were part of the coalition so that it can represent all communities.
“We cannot be alone. We need other parties to face the elections and form a government.
“By itself, Bersatu can win seats, but it will not be enough to form a government,” Muhyiddin said.
Bersatu, he said, must survive politically by ensuring that he works together with Umno and PAS in Perikatan so that there is a stable government.
As much as he would like to stay away from talking politics, he said he had to address the issue of the perceived “cold relationship” between Bersatu and Umno.
“Normally I refrain from talking about politics, but the Bersatu General Meeting is a political stage.
“Some say that Bersatu and Umno have no chemistry. After all, some of us, like me, were from Umno, but all of that belongs to the past.
“Fate, however, has joined us with our rivals now to be allies in the Perikatan government and this is divine intervention,” he said.
“This is a test from God, which is bitter, but this is our chance as Malays and Muslims to unite after being so divided.
“Malaysian unity will remain an elusive dream and will never materialize in our lifetime, but why don’t we (Bersatu, Umno and PAS) seize this divine opportunity to put politics aside and be united?
“It may be a winding road full of thorns, but in the midst of such difficulties, I think there will be relief,” Muhyiddin said.
He implored his party members to rise to the occasion in serving the people and to work together with Umno and PAS to ensure a stable government.
“Politics is about helping people affected by the economy in the midst of the pandemic and ‘not fighting for power,'” he said.
Malaysians, Muhyiddin said, want a government that works.
“I know people are nauseated by the endless politicking.
“This is the time for Bersatu to rise to the occasion.
“This is the time to serve the people,” he emphasized.
As for Perikatan, he said it was “an important milestone, a legacy and an important decision.”
“Leaving Pakatan Harapan earlier this year and forming Perikatan was a difficult decision. Combine PAS and Bersatu and it will be a source of strength for Malays and Muslims, ”he said.
Regarding Perikatan’s victory in Sabah in September, he said: “We were accepted by the Sabahans because Perikatan was seen as a functioning government. I believe that in the next general elections, Perikatan will be accepted by the whole country ”.
The AGM was held practically yesterday and was shown on Facebook, with the high council meeting in Kuala Lumpur.
