Even with the recent increase in the price of onions, it was not what a trucker expected to hear from a police officer.
He was handing out sacks of the light bulb on Sunday when a corrupt police officer allegedly demanded bribes from him for allegedly violating the conditional motion control order (CMCO) in Senawang here.
The 26-year-old aide had left Shah Alam in a truck loaded with onions when he was detained at a police checkpoint at the Senawang toll plaza of the North-South Highway around 2 pm.
It emerged that when the attendant was unable to present the necessary CMCO interstate travel documents, he was told by a police officer that he could be arrested and fined.
The policeman reportedly offered to set him free for RM 200.
Sources said that when the attendant told him that he had no cash, the police officer allegedly demanded 10 sacks of onions to be distributed to each policeman at the checkpoint.
The assistant is known to have explained that he had lost his job in March due to the pandemic and was forced to take odd jobs to make ends meet.
He told the police that 10 bags of onions at RM 50 each would lose him half of his monthly salary.
Upon hearing this, the police officer relented and allegedly told the attendant to hand him only two sacks of light bulbs.
Feeling victimized, the truck attendant filed a police report upon returning to Shah Alam yesterday.
Seremban Police Chief, ACP, Mohd Said Ibrahim, said yesterday that an investigation was launched shortly after the report was submitted and a policeman was arrested in Senawang yesterday.
“The complainant was detained because he was unable to present the letter from his employer to allow him to travel during the CMCO. Payment was demanded, which was substituted for the onions that he carried in the truck. We will carry out a thorough investigation and take the necessary measures, “he said.
