KUALA LUMPUR: The investigation into the case of the imported meat cartel in Senai, Johor Bahru, is ongoing, Minister of Internal Trade and Consumer Affairs, Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi (pix) told Dewan Rakyat today.

He said the investigation is being carried out under paragraph 8 of the Trade Descriptions (Halal Certification and Marking) Order of 2011, which states that anyone who certifies that any food, product or service in relation to the food or product it’s halal, it’s in order.

If convicted, he said, the company could be fined not to exceed RM200,000 and, for a second or subsequent violation, not more than RM500,000.

“Additional investigation will also be conducted under the 2011 Commercial Description (Definition of Halal) Order if the product was obtained from a non-halal or meat source.

“Starting today, investigating officers are gathering evidence, recording witness statements and obtaining information and other documents from relevant agencies,” Nanta said during the minister’s question time at the Dewan Rakyat here today.

He said this in response to Ahmad Tarmizi Sulaiman (PAS-Sik) who wanted to know the development of the investigation and the actions taken to deal with the meat cartel that also processes pork in Senai.

Nanta said the preliminary investigation found no pork at the scene and once the investigation is complete, the case will be referred to a deputy prosecutor for further action.

“The integrated inspection was carried out with other agencies, especially officials from the Malaysian Department of Islamic Development and the State Islamic Religious Councils. From December 4-6, a total of 128 premises have been inspected and no action has been taken except for the initial case in Johor, ”he said.

According to Nanta, the ministry also cooperated with the Malaysian Department of Quarantine and Inspection Services and the Customs Department on the issue of imported frozen meat products.

“The ministry will not compromise and will crack down on any merchant who tries to take advantage by using fake halal certificates to mislead and mislead consumers,” he said. – Called
