Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team was fifth in the English top flight, 37 points behind Liverpool, when the 2019-20 season was suspended due to the coronavirus.
The Red Devils were starting to show signs of improvement under Solskjaer, but Manchester United legend Cole says his former club still needs to sign several players to bridge the gap with players like Liverpool and City.
He told MEN: “It is the million dollar question, whatever we buy to try to close the gap that Liverpool and Man City are also trying to buy to further open the gap.”
‘It’s like Formula 1, once one team starts closing the gap, it seems like another team does something to find a little more.
‘Liverpool will win the league for the first time in 30 years, you turn around and think” how the hell did it take so long “, is because the gap continues to grow and grow.
‘What will it take? Four, possibly five players, then with the performances, the gap begins to close and confidence grows. “
Cole, who was part of the Manchester United team that won the triples in 1998-99, added: “I think it’s about the winning mindset.”
