BUTTERWORTH: The Department of Highway Transportation (JPJ) announced today that it has received the highest bids for a vehicle registration plate in the country to date, totaling RM7.2 million for the “PPP” series. The previous record holder was the “SYG” plate at RM3.7 million.

The PPP series was open for online bidding since November 5 and ended on November 9. The three highest offers were: PPP 1 – RM260,000; PPP 9 – RM160,000; and PPP 6 – RM140,000.

Other high bids obtained were for PPP 7 (RM120,000), PPP 888 (RM110,000) and PPP 999, which had 28 bidders, at RM106,000.

At a press conference at JPJ’s Penang headquarters in Seberang Jaya today, its deputy general manager for planning and operations, Zamakhshari Hanipah, said there were only 4,917 bidders for the PPP series, with 5,082 yet to be hired.

Meanwhile, Bernama reported that Zamakhshari said the department raised RM203.88 million since the implementation of its JPJeBid online vehicle license plate bidding system in April last year.

He said the collections involved 158 series of vehicle license plates that were opened to the public for bidding across the country.

“From April to December last year, JPJ raised RM61.96 million in bids for 54 series of vehicle registration plates and from January to yesterday we have raised RM141.92 million, involving 104 series of tenders.”
