PETALING JAYA: Malaysia has been endorsed as a possible representative of the Western Pacific Region (WPRO) on the Executive Board (EB) of the World Health Organization (WHO) for the period 2021-2024, says Tan Sri Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah (Photo).

Dr. Noor Hisham, Chairman of the International Society of Surgery (ISS) Subcommittee on Global Surgery, said this after attending the virtual meeting of members of the Council of the International Society of Surgery (ISS).
“I presented my report on the latest updates on our efforts to achieve safe and affordable surgery,” he said in a Facebook post on Sunday (October 18).
Dr. Noor Hisham said that he shared on the implementation of the Global Surgery Ecosystem Framework to increase timely access to safe and affordable surgery in which six states, involving 16 non-specialized Ministry of Health district hospitals, have been recruited since the project was launched in September 2019..
“As of October, a total of 487 surgical cases have been performed by trained physicians and assisted by trained nurses or physician assistants. Supervision and training are conducted by identified leading hospital specialists,” he said.
Dr. Noor Hisham also posted on the Framework for Action for Safe and Affordable Surgery in the Western Pacific Region (2021-2030), which was unanimously endorsed by member states during the 71st Virtual Meeting of the Western Pacific Regional Committee. from the WHO on October 7.
He said the approved resolution urges member states to use the framework as a guide to develop or strengthen health systems to improve access to safe and affordable surgical care.
He added that he also spoke about the Tuanku Muhriz (Rural Surgery) Roving Fellowship, adding that this scholarship is offered to members and fellow surgeons who are based or trained in the UK to travel to Malaysia to train or experience the remote clinic and rural. practice.
