PETALING JAYA: There will be no “Unity Budget” if the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government chooses to reject any of the six key measures proposed yesterday by Pakatan Harapan (PH), said DAP Secretary General Lim Guan Eng.
He said the approval of a “Unit Budget” would be crucial to upholding the royal decree to reject a state of emergency and would also help avoid early elections.
In a statement, Lim said that “PH has clearly stated that this budget consultation process is not an expression of support or acceptance of the political and moral legitimacy of the current federal government of the PN.”
“If any of the six key measures proposed by PH is rejected, then there will be no ‘Unit Budget’ that can work for the benefit of the nation, our national economy and the rakyat.”
PH had made six suggestions yesterday during a meeting with Finance Minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz, which, according to the opposition, will help revive the economy by creating jobs and stimulating businesses.
These measures include: Increasing funding from the Ministry of Health to address Covid-19 and non-communicable diseases with a special funding allocation for Sabah; the extension of social protection and an increase in social assistance to 1,000 ringgit; and the extension of the credit moratorium until March 31, 2021.
The proposals also called for the current wage subsidy to be maintained until March 31, 2021 and the creation of 600,000 jobs through the [email protected] scheme; an increase in funding for education; and a commitment to development expenses for the National Fiberization Connectivity Plan and the improvement of the water infrastructure in Selangor, Kelantan and Pahang.
Lim also dispelled speculation that supporting a “unity budget” is the same as forming a unity government.
