KUALA LUMPUR: Kuala Lumpur police will take legal action against people who drive electric scooters (e-scooters) on the road from January 1 of next year.

The head of the Kuala Lumpur Traffic Control and Investigation Department, ACP, Zulkefly Yahya, said his department had been receiving many complaints from the public about electric scooters on the road.

“The use of electric scooters is not allowed on the road, and it is a nuisance for other road users, as well as dangerous as it can cause accidents.

“These people (electric scooter drivers) can only ride in the advertised areas, that is, on playgrounds and in permitted areas around shopping centers,” he told reporters here.

He said drivers of electric scooters would have to apply for a special permit license from the director general of the Department of Highway Transportation (JPJ) if they wanted to use the vehicle on the road.

“So far, the police have identified three areas in the city where scooters are being actively used, namely around Dataran Merdeka, KLCC and Bukit Bintang,” he said, adding that currently the police are only advising users to stop. to drive them.

Zulkefly said that from January 1, action could be taken under the Road Transport Act, in addition to imposing fines on errant people.

The use of e-scooters, categorized as micromobility vehicles, became popular in May and has become a trend in today’s society, as it is easily available and allows pedestrians to move quickly from one place to another. -Called
