GEORGE TOWN: Authorities shelved a measure to suspend Penang’s ferry service for three months starting on September 1, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said.
He said that Transport Minister Datuk Seri, Dr. Wee Ka Siong, had told him in a meeting on Thursday that the ferry service would operate as usual for now.
The suspension was previously planned to make way for upgrade works to be carried out for a new and improved ferry service to Penang.
“The ministry will make a presentation to the state government on the improvement of the ferry terminal, as well as the contingency plans, before carrying out the project.
“Suspension of ferry services can take place once the upgrade project starts. Some modifications to the terminal are needed before new services can be introduced.
“The ferry service will continue to operate as usual until they need to upgrade as they will have to analyze the logistics, whether it will operate partially or otherwise,” he said at a press conference after the Greatech Donation Day ceremony at his Bayan Baru factory yesterday.
Chow said that the ministry had also decided to hand over the ferry operations to Penang Port Sdn Bhd, adding that RM30 thousand had been allocated for the purchase of new ferries.
He said the meeting also addressed the Penang International Airport (PIA) expansion project and the Bayan Lepas light rail transit (LRT).
On the issue of the airport expansion, Chow said that Dr. Wee had responded well to Penang’s proposal that the project should be excluded from the National Airport Strategic Plan study, as preparations for development were already in place. an advanced stage.
However, he said he would leave it up to Dr. Wee to make further announcements on the matter.
“Regarding the LRT project, the Public Land Transport Agency has sent the request for the state government’s rail scheme to the ministry for approval,” he said.
