Nine charged with driving under the influence in Johor

JOHOR BARU: A total of nine people were charged in the Court of First Instance here for driving under the influence of alcohol under the new Road Transportation (Amendment) Act of 2020.

However, only eight of the defendants pleaded guilty to the charge read to them in front of Magistrate Nurasidah A. Rahman.

According to the charge sheet, all of the defendants are between 25 and 56 years old and were detained during the “Ops Mabuk” roadblocks that took place between 23 and 25 October in Johor Baru and Iskandar Puteri.

All of the defendants were driving under the influence of alcohol above the prescribed limit of 50 mg of alcohol in 100 ml of blood.

The act is an offense under Section 45A (1) of the Highway Transportation (Amendment) Act of 2020 to drive under the influence of alcohol carrying a jail term of not more than two years, a fine ranging from RM10 , 000 and RM30,000 and have your license revoked for two years or more.

The prosecution was carried out by Asst Supt Azmi Abdul Salam, while all the accused were not represented.

One of the defendants, a 56-year-old man who has pleaded not guilty, was ordered to hire a lawyer and post bail of RM13,000 on 26 November to bring up the case again.

The rest were sentenced by the court to one week in prison and a fine of RM10,000 each, and their driver’s licenses were suspended for two years.

Failure to pay the fine would result in an additional 10 months in prison.

On October 22, Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Wee Ka Siong said that the recently amended Road Transport Law will come into effect on October 23 (Friday) as he has received the start date of the appointment. of the Attorney General.

Under the recently amended law, those who cause death by recklessness or by driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs will face stiffer penalties.
