KUALA LUMPUR: Nine people have been arrested on suspicion of falsely registering prepaid SIM cards that can be used by criminals for fraudulent telephone and online activities, police said today.
The director of the Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department, Zainuddin Yaacob, said the raids took place in Negeri Sembilan and the Klang Valley last weekend, starting on Friday.
“They are being investigated under the Criminal Code, the Computer Crimes Act, the Communications and Multimedia Act and the Crime Prevention Act of 1959,” he said at a press conference here.
The union’s illicit activities included registering SIM cards in the name of foreigners and locals and installing international phone call services without using the telecommunications company’s gateway.
“They would then sell these pre-registered SIM cards to other unions, such as those involved in unlicensed money loans, Macau scams, African scams, and online scams.”
It revealed that these unions had used the SIM cards to contact the victims and communicate with each other to try to avoid detection by the authorities.
“This had made it difficult for the police to identify the criminals.”
Items seized during the raids included more than 10,000 photocopied passports, 313 photocopied identity cards and SIM cards.
