KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama): A night market merchant was sentenced to five months in jail by the Magistrates Court here on Monday (November 30) for beating his 70-year-old mother on Saturday (November 28) after she refused to give him money.
Magistrate Mohamed Fared Abdul Latif ordered Abdul Halim Ahmad Fuad’s jail term to start from the date of his arrest on Saturday.
Abdul Halim, 40, had previously pleaded guilty to one count under Section 323 of the Penal Code of causing serious harm to his mother, Rahyah Abd Rahman, at a home in Jalan Jambu Golok, Taman Seri Delima, Sentul here at 7:30 am on Saturday.
The facts of the case indicate that the accused had scolded and then hit his mother on the head after she rejected his request for money, after which the victim contacted the police for help.
Previously, Abdul Halim, who was not represented, requested a lenient sentence, alleging that he suffered from psychological problems.
However, Deputy Prosecutor Illya Syaheedah Mohd Razif urged the court to pass a sentence that reflects the seriousness of the crime, especially considering that the victim was an elderly relative.
