PETALING JAYA: Former Prime Minister Dr. Mahathir Mohamad should give way to younger political figures during the upcoming general elections, Pejuang Acting President Mukhriz Mahathir said.
“I feel like it’s time for a new generation (to show up) during GE15,” he said last night on an Astro Awani talk show.
“I feel it was ideal for GE14 as we (Pakatan Harapan) faced a giant party in Barisan Nasional … a kleptocratic government that had unlimited funding … but even then, we were able to win because we joined other parties, we left Putting our differences aside, we compromised and focused in a direction that was inclusive and united. “
So said the former Kedah menteri kissing when asked about the possibility of his father running in the next election.
In September, Mahathir said he would not oppose GE15, but changed his mind less than two weeks later, saying his position was not well received by his followers.
The two-time prime minister formed a new political party, Pejuang, in August. The party registration is still pending approval by the Registrar of Societies (RoS).
Pejuang is not aligned with any party, and when asked if Anwar Ibrahim’s candidacy as prime minister would prevent Pejuang from entering a grand coalition with PKR, Mukhriz reiterated his stance that new faces should come to light.
“For me, I feel like it’s time to see new leaders,” he said.
“If not, with the same names that are mentioned, I’m not sure the public will support them, especially the young voters who will vote in GE15.
“It is time for us to change the current, controversial political paradigm. We can see many good examples in other countries, where unfamiliar faces emerged and caused a wave.
Pejuang’s pro-temporary vice president, Marzuki Yahya, raised the idea of a grand opposition coalition earlier this month, calling on federal opposition MPs to unite to overthrow the government of Perikatan Nasional (PN).
