New video shot on iPhone shows camera’s capabilities in low light

Apple has released a new video series, titled “Experiments.” We’ve seen filmmakers work with various elements to create abstract short videos, and so far these are some of the most impressive mobile videos I’ve seen under the filming banner on iPhone. Now the latest video recreates another universe, with a heavy focus on the “dark” element of things, using magnets, liquids, and various materials, and (of course) the iPhone 12 Pro.

The iPhone 12 Pro now features a LiDAR sensor, which provides a detailed AR depth map. Additionally, LiDAR also gives you faster and more accurate autofocus, and Apple promises 6 times the autofocus speed in low light conditions. That seems to be the focus of Experiments V: Dark Universe, and the results are pretty creepy:

As always, “additional hardware” was used, with a number of stands and tripods used, although the filmmakers speak of the benefits that the iPhone 12 Pro brings. Most of the work, it seems, was focused on creating wacky images. , with the filmmakers using different forms of liquids and solids to recreate an entirely new universe.

It’s a bit difficult to describe in words, so spend five minutes on the behind-the-scenes video. Personally, I found it even more interesting than the actual Dark Universe video:

The entire video is also shot in portrait orientation (because TikTok … right?), Which remains in trend. As such, you better watch Experiments V: Dark Universe on a mobile phone. Some of the things you see in the behind-the-scenes video also come with a warning (“don’t try”), so you might want to think twice before recreating something similar.

Dark Universe is the fifth installment of the Experiments series, with previous episodes (Elements, Full Circle, Cascade, Fire & Ice) also available on YouTube, along with behind-the-scenes videos. According to Apple, the series allows you to see what is possible “given an iPhone, simple materials and unlimited creativity.”
