PUTRAJAYA: New regulations are being imposed in the eastern coastal area of Sabah to prevent illegal immigrants from entering the country.
Starting October 11, small boat movements from the islands of the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (Esszone) can only reach the mainland to stock up on food and basic items from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said that fishing boats and boats registered with the Department of Fisheries can dock from 6 am to 6 pm at docks allowed by the authorities.
“This permit is subject to a permit issued by the district police chief,” he said on Friday (October 9).
“Another ruling that will be imposed is that unconventional ships from Indonesia and the Philippines will not be able to enter Esszone waters for barter and transshipment activities,” he said.
Ismail Sabri, however, did not specify how long these restrictions will apply, but said that steps must be taken to prevent foreigners from entering the country illegally and to stop Covid-19 infections.
He said the National Security Council had also decided to strengthen the presence of police personnel and assets in Esszone.
