New Covid-19 cluster in Kedah as Sabah cases rise

Two health workers in Kedah tested positive, while a clinic in Penang was disinfected.

PETALING JAYA: A new cluster of Covid-19 was reported today in Kedah, while an increase of 50 new cases was reported among those detained in a prison in Lahad Datu, Sabah.

The new group, called the Sungai group, involves two health workers in a medical center, said health director-general Noor Hisham Abdullah.

The first patient had developed symptoms on August 30 but did not seek any treatment. A Covid-19 screening test on Saturday was positive. The second case was a close contact, another healthcare worker, who developed symptoms on September 5 and sought treatment. One test came back positive.

“The two cases were admitted to Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital, Alor Setar, for isolation and treatment,” said Noor Hisham.

The 50 new cases in Sabah were from the Benteng Lahad Datu group, which began when two undocumented immigrants detained at the Lahad Datu District Police Headquarters tested positive for Covid-19 on August 31 and were admitted to Lahad Datu Hospital. .

Within a week, another 66 tests came back positive, including a prison officer and a relative. The others were all detained.

Noor Hisham said that monitoring and surveillance of four groups of Covid-19 in Kedah had ended today.

The Sivagangga group registered 45 cases, the Muda group (three cases), the Meranti group (two cases) and the Kurau group (five cases).

In Penang, a private clinic in Ayer Itam was closed for disinfection after a confirmed Covid-19 patient was found to have sought treatment at the clinic last Tuesday. He had visited the clinic to receive treatment for his diarrhea.

The four nurses and two doctors on duty and the patients present have been sent for close evaluation and monitoring, the clinic said today.

Penang registered a new case of Covid-19 yesterday, and another case today, a close contact of the first patient.
