KUALA LUMPUR: All the flats over 40 years old in the capital, including those built by private developers, will be rehabilitated within the framework of the urban renewal program of the Ministry of Federal Territories.

The remodel would include the expansion of some apartments to a size of 750 to 800 square feet and the provision of condominium-style facilities.

FT Minister Annuar Musa said old flats that were small in size or no longer fit for occupancy would be rebuilt with various facilities and equipment provided.

“The Kuala Lumpur City Council (DBKL) has prepared guidelines for areas with old, dilapidated, small and overcrowded housing to be rebuilt under the urban renewal program.

“The guidelines are ready and have been approved to encourage and assist the private sector to work together with DBKL in this effort. The identified areas will be demolished and rebuilt, subject to the agreement of the original owners, ”he told reporters today.

Annuar said the program would go hand in hand with the development of departments owned by DBKL.

“All of these, including the Seri Perlis flats in Keramat, Seri Labuan (Cheras) and Seri Negeri Sembilan (Sentul), will be rebuilt so that the owners can get a brand new home with a size of 75 to 800 square feet, three bedrooms and complete with facilities similar to those of regular condos, ”he said.

“We hope this brings relief to owners of older apartments.”
