PETALING JAYA: A new group of Covid-19 cases has emerged at a construction site in Setia Alam involving 12 foreign workers, says the Ministry of Health. Chief Health Officer Datuk Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah said the group was first detected on Wednesday when a notification was received from a private hospital.

He said the hospital conducted health screenings on five Bangladeshi workers, who were supposed to return to work at the site. Three of them tested positive for Covid-19.

“The three positive cases also shared housing with 18 other workers. After that, an investigation and evaluations were carried out on his close contacts.

“Of the 28 people examined so far, 12 tested positive and all are Bangladeshi. Nine are negative and seven are still awaiting their results.

“The cause of the infection is still under investigation,” Dr. Noor Hisham said in a statement.

Yesterday there were 54 new cases of Covid-19, bringing the total number of cases to 6,589. An additional death was reported, bringing the country’s death toll to 108.

The last fatality was a 74-year-old Malaysian woman, who had a history of autoimmune disease, high blood pressure, and thyroid. She was a close contact of a positive Covid-19 case from the meeting in Sri Petaling.

Dr. Noor Hisham said that of the 54 cases, 45 of them involved foreigners and one was an imported case.

He said three of the 53 local cases were from the group and localities located under the improved movement control order.

“A total of 65 more patients were discharged yesterday, which places the country’s recovery rate at 74.8% of the total number of positive cases. There are currently 1,552 active cases under treatment in the country’s health centers,” he said.

Dr. Noor Hisham said 18 patients are in the intensive care unit, and six need ventilation support.

He also said there were 28 positive cases of Pedas, the Rembau group reported on Friday, bringing the total number of cases to 88. The group was made up of seven Malays, 33 Nepalese, 26 Bangladeshis, 11 Indonesians and 11 Myanmar citizens.
