New cases surpass the 3,000 mark, many affected with Sari in S’gor

COVID-19 | The Ministry of Health reported 3,027 new cases of Covid-19 and eight deaths in the last 24 hours.

Johor (1,103) reported more cases than the entire Klang Valley (1,039).

Most new cases in Johor are attributed to the Bukit Pasir group (779 new cases, 1,379 in total) that started in Muar district and has spread to Sik district in Kedah.

Little else is known about this group, other than that it is a workplace group and at the time it was announced (December 28), it only involved locals.

Meanwhile, according to the Selangor Health Department, there were 33 new cases in the state that were detected among those with severe acute respiratory disease (Sari) and 49 cases that were detected with other symptoms.

This represents a dramatic increase from the figures reported in previous weeks. These cases are not tied to close contacts or existing clusters.

The Ministry of Health has not held a press conference today, but one is scheduled for tomorrow. RT-PCT capability and test numbers are only revealed during press conferences.

Main indicators:

  • Active cases: 25,742 ↑ (1,395 more than the previous day, new record)
  • ICU patients: 142 ↑ (One more than the previous day, record)
  • Intubated patients: 63 ↓ (Four less than the previous day)
  • Deaths: 8

Deceased

The eight reported deaths were spread across the country. The cumulative death toll nationwide is 521.

The details of the deceased are as follows:

‘Patient 74.949’ – man, 56 years old, died at Sungai Buloh Hospital Selangor.

‘Patient 99.823’ – 56-year-old man, deceased at Sungai Buloh Hospital, Selangor. Categorized as a Kuala Lumpur case.

‘Patient 110.291’ – woman, 78 years old, died in Penang General Hospital.

‘Patient 121,311’ – woman, 81 years old, died in Ampang Hospital, Selangor.

‘Patient 121.694’ – 79-year-old woman, deceased at Sungai Buloh Hospital, Selangor.

‘Patient 122,110’ – 83-year-old man, deceased at Tuanku Jaafar Hospital, Negeri Sembilan.

‘Patient 122,845’ – male, 38 years old, died in Serdang Hospital, Selangor.

‘Patient 121,201’ – foreign woman, 60 years old, deceased at Duchess of Kent Hospital, Sabah.

Clusters

The Ministry of Health also classified nine new clusters today.

Senai Murni’s cluster involved screening at a workplace in Kulai Johor. There are 66 cases in this group.

The Tapak Bina Hartamas group involved a construction site in the Hulu Langat district in Selangor. There are 48 cases in this group.

Damai Pelangi’s group involves a detention center also on Hulu Selangor in Selangor. The index case was detected on December 18 after the selection of detainees and so far there are 21 cases.

The Tapak Bina Jalan Ipoh group involved a construction site in Kepong district, Kuala Lumpur with 98 cases so far.

Rungkup’s group also involved the Kepong district in Kuala Lumpur where the index case was diagnosed on January 1 after reporting symptoms. There are 20 cases in this group.

The Desa Setapak cluster involved the Titiwangsa district in Kuala Lumpur where the index case was diagnosed on January 2 after reporting symptoms. There are 15 cases in this group.

Jalan Jaya’s group in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur involved an index case that was diagnosed on January 1 after reporting symptoms. There are seven cases in this group.

Ziarah Putra’s cluster involved an index case in Putrajaya who tested positive on January 4 after reporting symptoms. There are seven cases in this group.

The Keranji Tabuan group involved the Kuching district in Sarawak where the index case tested positive on January 5 after reporting symptoms. There are six cases in this group.
