PETALING JAYA: The Ministry of Health has identified a new isolated group, the “Bunga group”, which involves the crew of a ship in Port Dickson, Negri Sembilan. The ship has a history of travel to a port in Singapore.
“A total of 34 crew members were tested on August 28, and of the total, four tested positive for Covid-19, six tested negative and another 24 are still awaiting the results,” said Health Director General Tan Sri Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah. (Photo) in a statement yesterday.
He said the four positive cases were asymptomatic and involved two Malaysians and two non-Malaysians.
“After testing positive, the patients were referred to Sungai Buloh Hospital, so they did not pose any risk of transmission in the local community as this is an imported isolated group,” he said.
“Prevention and control measures such as disinfection and decontamination have been carried out on the vessel,” he said, adding that the cause of the infection is still under investigation.
Meanwhile, a Covid-19 related death was reported in the Tawar group yesterday, bringing the country’s death toll to 127 or 1.36% of the total number of Covid-19 cases.
Dr Noor Hisham said death number 127 involved a 62-year-old Malaysian man who had a history of diabetes and high blood pressure.
The man began experiencing coughing symptoms on August 11 and was admitted to Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital in Kedah on August 13 after testing positive for Covid-19.
“His health condition deteriorated and he needed respiratory assistance from August 19. His death was announced on Sunday at 10.35 pm,” said Dr. Noor Hisham.
The total number of Covid-19 infections saw a single digit increase yesterday, with six new Covid-19 cases registered, bringing the total number of infections in the country to 9,340 cases.
“Of the six new cases, four were imported cases reported in Selangor that occurred abroad and involved two Malays and two non-Malays.
Two locally transmitted cases involved Malays who were from Kedah, one from the Tawar group and the other from the Telaga group.
“Six patients have recovered, bringing the cumulative total of recoveries to 9,054,” he said.
