PETALING JAYA: In conjunction with the Chinese New Year, the National Council for the Blind of Malaysia (NCBM) celebrated the occasion with its first online music concert.

The musical performance was performed by the blind and visually impaired and was streamed live on their Facebook page on Saturday (February 13).

The concert began with a Chinese New Year medley prepared remotely by blind and visually impaired musicians located in various venues.

Throughout the 90-minute concert, the musical performance featured various children and young adults playing piano, guitar, violin, and other instruments with Chinese New Year melodies and pop songs.

The event was also co-organized by the National Family Support Group for Children and People with Special Needs.

Senator Datuk Ras Adiba Mohd Radzi, guest of honor at the event, said it was a wonderful way for people to come together as Malaysians to celebrate their diversity and rich cultural heritage.

“In these strange and disturbing times of Covid-19, it is encouraging that we can come together,” he said.

Ras Adiba said that he also hoped that the country would quickly adhere to the Marrakesh Treaty to facilitate access to published works for people who are blind, visually impaired or reading impaired.

The treaty accession talks, he said, date back to 2018, when the Intellectual Property Corporation (MyIPO) had organized a national seminar that aimed to prepare the country for accession.

He said that membership would accelerate improvements for his community in three ways: digital accessibility, accessible publishing, and cross-border access to learning materials.

“This would end the national famine for accessible, up-to-date and rapidly evolving knowledge and information,” he said.
