Nazrin Hassan’s widow, Cradle Fund CEO Samirah Muzaffar, is among four accused of murdering Nazrin on June 13, 2018.

SHAH ALAM: The 28th prosecution witness in the murder of Cradle Fund CEO Nazrin Hassan said she was told that the fire in the victim’s room was caused by a mobile phone exploding.

Nazrin’s personal driver, Muhammad Nabil Faqih, 28, told the High Court here today that it was his employer’s stepson who informed him of the matter when they met on the day of the incident.

Nabil said he knew that Nazrin had died when his employer’s secretary, Anisa, contacted him on June 14, 2018. Upon hearing the news, he had rushed to the victim’s home, accompanied by his wife.

“On June 14 (2018), Nazrin gave me the day off. I got a call (from Anisa) reporting that Nazrin had passed away. When they asked me how, they told me there was a fire in their house.

“When I got to his (Nazrin) house, I met his stepson and asked him how the fire had happened.

“He said the mobile phone exploded and fragments from the explosion had also hit him on the back,” he said when questioned by Deputy Prosecutor Mohd Asnawi Abu Hanipah.

Previously, Asnawi asked Nabil about his whereabouts on June 14, 2018, and how he knew his employer had died.

When asked what he meant by “in the back,” as Nazrin’s stepson put it, Nabil could not explain because he did not remember the details.

“I don’t remember much except that when I was leaving, Nazrin’s stepson said that Nazrin may have been attacked or beaten by someone because he had blood on his back, while pointing to the back of his head,” he said.

Asnawi: He (Nazrin’s stepson) said someone could have done it. Because he said that? Didn’t you ask?

Nabil : I did not do it.

Asnawi : What was your reaction to hearing this?

Nabil: Since I’ve known the stepson, he loves to tell stories the way children do, and I never took them seriously. You may have seen it from afar and thought about it.

Asnawi: You know that he talks a lot but you didn’t ask him more?

Nabil: No, I just listened.

Nazrin’s widow, Samirah Muzaffar, 45, a former senior executive of the Malaysian Intellectual Property Corporation, and two children, aged 17 and 14, as well as an Indonesian woman, Eka Wahyu Lestari, who is still at large, have been accused of murdering Nazrin in a house in Mutiara Damansara, between 11:30 p.m. on June 13, 2018 and 4:00 a.m. the next day.

The hearing before Judge Ab Karim Ab Rahman continues on September 25.
