NASA plans to land on the red planet with its new Rover Perseverance sometime in early 2021. NASA will hit a small helicopter in the back of the Mars rover, it has without scientific value and it’s just there for a technical demo of the launch of the first man-made plane on another planet.
Since the launch of the helicopter on Mars will mark the first time that humans launch an airplane on another planet, NASA has decided that the helicopter deserves a name. NASA received essays from students across the country on the name of the helicopter, and high school student Vaneeza Rupani from Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, won. NASA now has officially called the ‘Ingenio’ helicopter.
This is what the essay presentation says, “The ingenuity and brilliance of the people who work hard to overcome the challenges of interplanetary travel are what allow us all to experience the wonders of space exploration. Wit is what enables people to accomplish amazing things, and allows us to expand our horizons to the edges of the universe.“
NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine said: “Ingenuity sums up the values that our technical helicopter demonstration will show everyone when it takes off next year as the first plane on the surface of another planet. It took a lot of hard and ingenious work to prepare the helicopter and then put it in the rover, and it will take much more. I was happy that we had another great name from the Naming Contest Finalists from which I was able to select something so representative of this exciting part of our next mission to Mars.“
