KUALA LUMPUR: The trial of 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) was rescheduled for May 19 after former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak received the green light to postpone the hearing for him to attend Parliament.

The Najib defense team, led by lawyer Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, is understood to have requested the postponement in order for the Pekan MP to address the one-day parliamentary session.

The hearing was initially scheduled for May 13, but was later adjourned until May 18.

Deputy Attorney General Ahmad Akram Gharib confirmed the new date.

“The case will resume for the hearing on May 19 at 2pm,” he said.

Najib’s 1MDB trial with RM2.28bil is expected to be the first high-profile hearing to resume in an open court amid relaxation of the Motion Control Order (MCO) restrictions.

Najib, 67, faces four counts of abusing his position for a bonus totaling RM2.28bil in 1MDB funds and 21 money laundering charges involving the same money.

The 1MDB trial was last heard in court before Judge Collin Lawrence Sequerah on March 12, just days before the first phase of the MCO was imposed on March 18, which effectively saw the closure of the judicial complexes. in all the country.

Shafee is expected to continue the interrogation of the ninth prosecution witness, former 1MDB chief executive Datuk Shahrol Azral Ibrahim Halmi, when the hearing resumes.
