Najib Razak was sentenced to 12 years in jail and fined RM 210 million for corruption of RM 42 million belonging to SRC International.

PETALING JAYA: Najib Razak has requested more time to present his appeal petition against his conviction on seven corruption charges in relation to RM42 million belonging to SRC International.

Deputy Prosecutor Mohd Ashraf Adrin Kamaril said that the Deputy Clerk of the Court of Appeal, Darmafikri Abu Adam, will inform the parties of his decision today or tomorrow.

“The defense requested an extension to present its appeal.

“The deputy registrar will transmit a decision after receiving instructions,” Ashraf told reporters after case management today.

Ashraf said another case management would take place on October 2.

Najib’s lawyer, Nur Syahirah Hanapiah, said she had written to the court asking for an extension of time.

“We received the appeal records on September 17 and the 10-day period will expire on September 28,” he said.

FMT understands that the appeal records are in 112 volumes.

Under normal circumstances, the appellant must indicate in the petition where the trial judge made an error of fact and law within 10 days of receiving the appeal records.

On July 28, High Court Judge Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali sentenced the former prime minister to 12 years in prison and ordered him to pay a fine of 210 million ringgit.

Nazlan found Najib guilty of abuse of power, criminal breach of trust, and money laundering.

Nazlan allowed Najib’s request to suspend the jail sentence and fine, but the former prime minister was asked to post bail of RM2 million, which he did.
