KUALA TERENGGANU (Bernama): The mysterious death of buffaloes belonging to the teenage Muhammad Syukur Khamis, who earned the nickname “Kampong Boy”, is not the first incident in Terengganu this year.
The director of the State Department of Veterinary Services (DVS), Dr. Mohd Termizi Ghazali, said other breeders also suffered the same fate after 22 buffalo and 15 cows died between August 9 and 28 in Kampung Tuman Jerong. , Marang.
He said the department had previously detected hemorrhagic septicemia, a bacterial disease in animals, and subsequently vaccination operations had been carried out on 675 cows and 55 buffalo belonging to 106 breeders in 12 villages since Aug. 30.
However, Dr. Mohd Tarmizi said that it is too early to determine the cause of death of the cattle belonging to the Kampong Boy family.
Based on the autopsy, buffalo belonging to Khamis Jusoh (father of Muhammad Syukur), 64, were found to be suffering from pneumonia and an enlarged heart. These are the hallmarks of hemorrhagic septicemia.
“Samples were taken from the animals and sent to the laboratory to determine the cause of death,” he said when contacted by Bernama on Monday (September 14).
Hemorrhagic septicemia is an infectious disease caused by the bacterium pasteurella multocida that can cause acute death in cattle. It is very contagious if one of the animals is infected.
“When an infected animal drinks water and other animals drink from the same water source, it could potentially become infected with the disease. Animals must be isolated and owners must inform DVS for vaccination to avoid transmission,” he added. – Bernama
