PETALING JAYA: MY Heli Club is calling on the public to stop releasing unverified information about the recent helicopter collision tragedy that killed two of its members.
Appealing for privacy and respect for the families of the victims, the club’s honorary treasurer, Datuk Leong Yeng Kit, said that speculation and misinformation would only derail and delay the official investigation into the tragedy.
“My Heli Club is in full cooperation with all parties investigating the tragedy,” he said in a statement posted on Facebook on Tuesday (November 10).
On Sunday (November 8), two of the club-approved helicopters crashed in Taman Melawati after a mid-air collision.
The club’s chief instructor, Commander (R) Mohamed Sabri Baharom, and his fellow experienced pilot Mohamed Irfan Mohamed Rawi were killed in the crash, while two others survived: former Malaysia Airlines Bhd group CEO Ahmad Jauhari Yahya and a Tan Chai Eian.
“The incident is currently being investigated by the police and the Air Accident Incident Office (AAIB),” Leong said.
He added that two people were on board each aircraft, which were piloted by experienced pilots who had added more than 7,000 flight hours.
The two helicopters left Subang airport around 11 a.m. on a combined flight.
“Commander (R) Mohamed Sabri led the combined flight.
“Unfortunately, an unfortunate incident occurred between the helicopters over Taman Melawati. As a result, the helicopters crashed,” Leong said.
My Heli Club also expressed its deepest condolences to the families of the accident victims.
“We will miss you deeply, we mourn your loss along with your family and friends.
“MY Heli Club asks for privacy and respect from the families of the victims during this difficult time,” Leong said.
