Multilingual app for workers to expose errant employers to be launched

KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama): The Ministry of Human Resources will introduce a new application that will allow two-way communication between the government and local and foreign workers.

Minister Datuk Seri M. Saravanan (Photo) He said the app, expected to be launched on January 11, would give workers the opportunity to inform the government about errant employers who neglect their (workers’) well-being.

“Workers do not have direct access to the government (to complain or report) … with this new application, (for example) when employers do not provide comfortable accommodation in accordance with Law 446 or do not follow standard operating procedures for health (SOP), employees can contact the government and their identities will be protected.

“We will engage directly with workers regardless of whether they are local or foreign. The app is a platform for filing complaints and providing information that will help the Department of Labor to act in case of oppression,” he said.

He was speaking to reporters after presenting the 2020 Maju Educational Development Institute (MIED) student loan checks to 301 beneficiaries here on Saturday (December 26).

According to him, the multilingual app aims to help local and foreign workers channel information directly to the government.

Meanwhile, Saravanan also reiterated its earlier statement that the government will not compromise with errant employers who neglect the welfare of their employees.

“… at the same time, the ministry wants to encourage employers to be more responsible for the well-being of their workers. This was so that Malaysia could improve its position on the International Labor Organization’s index of labor exploitation,” he said.

As for media reports about a factory in Klang that was allegedly transferring workers to a hotel before a raid was carried out, Saravanan said they had strong evidence.

“Although (there is) strong enough evidence that the site is not suitable for workers, before we arrived, workers had been ‘rushed’ to other places. Cheating is not a solution and employers should not take the opportunity to find an easy way out, ”Saravanan said.- Bernama
