PETALING JAYA: Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin rejected the proposal that the president of Umno, Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, receive the post of deputy prime minister, says Tan Sri Annuar Musa (Photo).

The former Umno secretary-general said the prime minister had made it clear that he would not appoint Ahmad Zahid or other politicians with ongoing court cases in his cabinet.

In an interview with Umno’s chief information officer Sharil Hamdan, which was broadcast on Facebook, Annuar said that Muhyiddin had made this known in a closed-door meeting with Umno leaders.

“They asked me for my point of view, and that if our president cannot become deputy prime minister, it is better not to have the position, and then the concept of the four senior ministers came up,” he said on Thursday (November 20).

Annuar questioned the intentions of the Umno members who urged that someone from the party be appointed deputy prime minister.

He asked if the members really wanted their party to be represented in a higher leadership position, or if they had wanted to gather support for a certain leader.

“If our political bureau decides to request a cabinet reorganization and apply for the post of deputy prime minister, for me, that is not bad.

“But we must ask ourselves: Is the reason for seeking the position of a certain person or do we want the prime minister to have a deputy prime minister representing Umno?

“Does that mean that when we ask for the post of deputy prime minister, we ask the prime minister to go against his word and name our president even though he has court cases?” he said.

He added that Ahmad Zahid has stated that he wants to clear his name in court and does not seek special treatment to close his cases.
