SANDAKAN (Bernama): The civil service workforce of 1.6 million people will not be reduced as a result of the ongoing implementation of the electronic government (e-government) system, says Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
He assured that while increasing the productivity and effectiveness of the public service was important, this should not be linked to the reduction of the public service workforce.
“Public officials can multitask to improve public service delivery.
The use of technology cannot be avoided, but the civil service workforce must also find ways to improve the quality of work, ”he said in a meeting with officials here on Sunday (August 30).
Muhyiddin said this during a question and answer session when asked if the number of civil service employees will be reduced once the e-government system is fully implemented.
“For example, if before this, three people were needed to perform a single task, only one would be sufficient once e-government is implemented, while the other two can work on other tasks,” he said.
While acknowledging the fact that scopes of work may differ once e-government fully takes off, the prime minister said the applied technologies would add value to the public delivery service.
Muhyiddin said he was satisfied with the performance of public officials, but nevertheless expressed confidence that the bar could be set even higher according to current developments. – Bernama
